History

Silver Cliff, located in Colorado’s Wet Mountain Valley, began as a silver boom town. The valley’s first settlers arrived in 1869, followed by over 100 German families in 1870. Prospectors soon arrived, and Custer County was formed in 1877 due to mining activity near Rosita. Silver Cliff emerged in 1878 when a rich silver deposit, “horn silver,” was discovered. By 1880, the town’s population had surged, making it the third-largest city in Colorado. However, the mining boom ended in 1882, leading to a population decline as businesses and residents moved to nearby Westcliffe. By 1900, only 576 people remained.
In 1807, Zebulon Pike’s expedition encountered harsh conditions in the Wet Mountain Valley, battling cold and hunger.
